The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies was established in 1972. In 1975 the Center was placed within the College of Social Sciences. In 1983, the Center was placed within the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. Directors of Center include: Leonard J. Arrington (1972-1980), Thomas G. Alexander (1980-1992), William A. Wilson (1992-1996), Edward A. Geary (1996-2002), Brian Q. Cannon (2002-2018) and Jay H Buckley (2018-).

Functions

To promote the study of all aspects of the American West. Programs of the center include conducting research on the American West, publishing a monograph series, sponsoring lectures and symposia, conducting an oral history program, assisting professional and student research through grants and fellowships, providing consultation services on oral history, and assisting high school students through the Utah History Fair. Center personnel also teach classes in academic departments on campus.
