Brigham Young University Bookstore

A bookstore has been operational in the university since 1906, when it was organized as the Students' Supply Association. It was brought about due to requests from students in favor of sending directly to publishing and supply houses for books and other supplies to get them at better prices.

Shortly before it was renamed and became the BYU Bookstore, President Ernest L. Wilkinson appointed a Board of Directors to serve as its governing body, initially to contribue to the plans for constructing a new bookstore. They were also to establish policies and supervise the management of the bookstore. Original members included Herald R. Clark, Chairman; Ben E. Lewis, Secretary; William F. Edwards, Director; Clarence E. Boyle, Director; Dr. Antone K. Romney, Director; Myron Walker, Student Body Business Manager; Kiefer B. Sauls, ex-officio member; and Ernest L. Wilkinson, ex-officio member. At that time, Neil McKnight was also appointed Manager, directly responsible to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors of the Bookstore reported to directly to the Board of Trustees and President of the University.

In May of 1952, the first meeting of Board of Directors of the BYU Bookstore was held, signifying the official title change from the Students' Supply Association. Today, the Bookstore continues to fulfill its mission by supplying required textbooks and other academic materials to the University and the community. It also continues to grow in diversity by offering a wide range of other useful products.

However, even after the organization of the Board of Directors, the bookstore was largely an orphan operation in that it was not a part of any academic college or specific administrative organization. So, in July of 1961, it was decided to put the bookstore under the direction of Auxiliary Services. At that time, Ben E. Lewis was appointed Vice President in Charge of Auxiliary Services and later, (in 1964), Vice President in Charge of Auxiliary and Communications Services. The Bookstore Manager during these years was Ivan L. Sanderson. By 1968, Ben E. Lewis had become Vice President over Business Affairs with Fred A. Schwendiman as Director of Auxiliary Services.

Continuing the trend of rapidly shifting leadership, in 1970, Roger E. Utley became Manager of the Bookstore. By 1976, the Bookstore was still under the leadership of Ben E. Lewis, now Executive Vice President, and was still considered a part of Auxiliary Services. At that time, Lyle S. Curtis was serving as Auxiliary Services Director.

In 1984, President Jeffrey R. Holland appointed John B. Stohlton as Assistant Executive Vice President for Auxiliary Services, of which the BYU Bookstore was still a part. Stohlton reported to Dr. William Rolfe Kerr, Executive Vice President. In 1985, John B. Stohlton was named Executive Vice President, replacing William Rolfe Kerr. Clyde J. Bair then became Assistant Executive Vice President of Auxiliary Services. He was replaced by Dean Fairbank in 1989 under the leadership of President Rex E. Lee. In 1990, Dee F. Andersen Administrative took over the Vice Presidential position with stewardship over the Assistant Administrative Vice President of Auxiliary Services (catalog 1990-91, pg. 288).

In 1991, Dean Fairbank's title was altered to Assistant Vice President of Student/Auxiliary Services (catalog 1991-92, pg. 300).

and again in 1994 to Assistant Student Life Vice President of Student Auxiliary Services (catalog 1994-95, pg. 380).

In 1996, the Dean Fairbank was reporting to Student Life Vice President and Dean of Student Life Maren M. Mouritsen. BYU Self-Study and Accreditation, 1996, UA 826

and then Alton L. Wade, Student Life Vice President (catalog 1997-98, pg. 429).

By 1998, David A. Hunt had been appointed as Assistant Student Life Vice President of Student Auxiliary Services (catalog 1998-99, pg. 426).

By 2001, his title had changed to Assistant Administrative Vice President of Student Auxiliary Services and he reported to Brad W. Farnsworth, Administrative Vice President (catalog 2001-02, pg. 430). The Bookstore was under the direction of Roger L. Reynolds (pg. 432).

Functions

The fundamental purpose of the BYU Bookstore is to supply required textbooks and other academic materials to the University community.

Assets and Administrative Structure

In 1952, shortly before the Students' Supply Association was renamed the BYU Bookstore, President Wilkinson appointed a Board of Directors as its administrative organization. A new manager was also appointed, directly responsible to the Board of Directors. The board reported directly to the Board of Trustees and the University President.

However, even after the creation of the Board of Directors, the bookstore remained somewhat of an orphan operation since it was not a part of any academic college or specific administrative organization. It wasn't until July of 1961 that the bookstore was put under the direction of Auxiliary Services. Auxiliary Services was under the direction of the Administrative Vice President who reported directly to the unversity President. By 1991, a Vice President over Student/Auxiliary Services was appointed. By 1994, it became known as Student Auxiliary Services, and still included the BYU Bookstore.
