A bookstore has been operational in the university since 1906, when it was organized as the Students' Supply Association. It was brought about due to requests from students in favor of sending directly to publishing and supply houses for books and other supplies to get them at better prices.

Shortly before it was renamed and became the BYU Bookstore, President Ernest L. Wilkinson appointed a Board of Directors to serve as its governing body, initially to contribue to the plans for constructing a new bookstore. They were also to establish policies and supervise the management of the bookstore. Original members included Herald R. Clark, Chairman; Ben E. Lewis, Secretary; William F. Edwards, Director; Clarence E. Boyle, Director; Dr. Antone K. Romney, Director; Myron Walker, Student Body Business Manager; Kiefer B. Sauls, ex-officio member; and Ernest L. Wilkinson, ex-officio member. At that time, Neil McKnight was also appointed Manager, directly responsible to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors of the Bookstore reported to directly to the Board of Trustees and President of the University.

In May of 1952, the first meeting of Board of Directors of the BYU Bookstore was held, signifying the official title change from the Students' Supply Association. Today, the Bookstore continues to fulfill its mission by supplying required textbooks and other academic materials to the University and the community. It also continues to grow in diversity by offering a wide range of other useful products.

Until the summer of 1961, the bookstore was largely an orphan operation in that it was not a part of any academic college or specific administrative organization. So, it was decided to put the bookstore under the direction of Auxiliary Services. The First One Hundred Years, 3:618

At that time, Ben E. Lewis was appointed Vice President in Charge of Auxiliary Services (catalog 1961-62, pg. 7)

and later (in 1964) Vice President in Charge of Auxiliary and Communications Services (catalog 1964-66, pg. 421).

In 1968, Ben E. Lewis became Vice President over Business Affairs with Fred A. Schwendiman as Director of Auxiliary Services (catalog 1968-70, pg. 519).

By 1970, Fred A. Schwendiman had been appointed Assistant Vice-President for Business Affairs and the Bookstore Manager was Roger E. Utley (catalog 1970-72, pg. 529).

By 1976, the Bookstore was under the leadership of Executive Vice President Ben E. Lewis. Still considered a part of Auxiliary Services. In catalog still listed under Student Services, Assistant Dean of Student Services still Gary H. Carver and Dean of Student Life still J. Elliot Cameron (catalog 1977-78, pg. 284). 1979 – The Bookstore is listed on its own under Roger E. Utley (catalog 1979-80, pg. 251). Still listed in catalog under Student Services, but Gary H. Carver’s title changed to Assistant Dean of Student Life with no mention of Student Services. 1980 – There is now a Student Services Vice President – J. Elliot Cameron (pg. 261). The Bookstore is then listed under Other Areas of Service under Manager Roger E. Utley (catalog 1980-81, pg. 263). 1981 – Still listed under Student Services but there is no listing for someone over Student Services. The only admin listing is under Other Areas of Service (catalog 1981-82, pg. 289). 1982-1984 – Listed under For Your Information (pg. 339). Admin listing the same (catalog 1982-83, pg. 351).

Functions

The fundamental purpose of the BYU Bookstore is to supply required textbooks and other academic materials to the University community.

Assets and Administrative Structure

In 1952, shortly before the Students' Supply Association was renamed the BYU Bookstore, President Wilkinson appointed a Board of Directors as its administrative organization. A new manager was also appointed, directly responsible to the Board of Directors. The board reported directly to the Board of Trustees and the University President.

However, even after the creation of the Board of Directors, the bookstore remained somewhat of an orphan operation since it was not a part of any academic college or specific administrative organization. It wasn't until July of 1961 that the bookstore was put under the direction of Auxiliary Services. Auxiliary Services was under the direction of the Administrative Vice President who reported directly to the unversity President. By 1991, a Vice President over Student/Auxiliary Services was appointed. By 1994, it became known as Student Auxiliary Services, and still included the BYU Bookstore.
