Brigham Young University. Visiting Committee

The Visiting Committee of the Brigham Young University was established in 1904. For most of its existence, the members of the committee were Susa Young Gates (1904-1919), Stephen L. Chipman (1904-1919), and Jesse Knight (1904-1919). These three were later joined by Willard Young (1915-1916) and Joseph F. Smith, Jr. (1915-1919) before the committee dissolved in 1919.

Functions

The Visiting Committee periodically toured the University and other schools associated with it and would then send a report to the Board of Trustees detailing the conditions they found at the University as well as any suggestions they had for correcting problems they had encountered. The committee would report on the numbers of teachers and students, the departments, the housing, as well as the spiritual conditions of the faculty and students.

The Visiting Committee consisted of members of the Brigham Young University Board of Trustees. The Presidency and Secretary of the University were also in charge of Transportation 1906-1915.
