Functions

University Writing's purpose is to foster effective written, oral, and visual communication among students at Brigham Young University, thus helping students to succeed academically and laying a foundation for lifelong learning. This is done through general education courses in First-Year Writing and Advanced Written and Oral Communication, in addition to improving writing instruction in various courses throughout the university curriculum.

Assets and Administrative Structure

University Writing includes the Writing Across the Curriculum program, which assists faculty members in integrating writing and writing instruction into their courses; the Writing Fellows program, which helps students develop mature writing skills through peer tutoring; and the Publications Lab, which aids students in publishing their scholarly and creative work. The University Writing Committee, a subcommittee of the Faculty General Education Council, develops criteria for evaluating and does evaluate university writing courses, and is chaired by an associate dean, at least until 2009. The unit itself is overseen by the Dean of Undergraduate Education, along with the associate and assistant deans. In addition, a consultant works with the Writing Across the Curriculum Program, while Honors University Writing courses and the Writing Fellows Program are each overseen by a coordinator.
