The Personal Development Program became the Student Life Developmental Project and Research Center in 1984. Directors included Maren M. Mouritsen (1984-1986) and David M. Sorenson (1986-1991). Responsibilities of the Student Life Developmental Project and Research Center shifted to the Counseling and Development Center in 1991.

Research involves internal and external research including all students at BYU.
