The Division of Special Services was responsible for the welfare of students in specific areas of university life. Wesley P. Lloyd, the Dean of Students, served as director.

Description

Established: 1945

Abolished: 1955

Location: Provo, Utah (1945-1955)

Functions

The Special Services organization was devised to focus greater attention on fundamental student needs, with the college life of a student being seen as a combination of academic, social and cultural attainment.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Preceding 1937, the Administrative Organization that became Special Services of Brigham Young University was centered in a number of committees of overlapping membership. Each committee reported directly to the President.

In 1945, President Howard S. McDonald appointed Dr. Wesley P. Lloyd as Dean of Students and Director of Special Services. A faculty committee on special services was also created to work under the direction of the Dean of Students.

The services included in the first centralized organization of Special Services included the areas of Admissions and Records, Attendance and Scholarship, Athletics, Academic Standards and Discipline, Counseling, Foreign Students Supervision, Student Organizations and Activities, Student Health, Student Housing, Student Employment and Financial Aids, Student Publications and Campus Security.
