The School of Library and Information Sciences, organized in 1977, offered a program leading to the Master of Library Science degree. There was also two two-year undergraduate programs available. Maurice P. Marchant (1977-1983) and Nathan M. Smith (1983-1988) served as directors.

Functions

The School of Library and Information Sciences functioned to educate individuals to use their abilities in creative and innovative ways in librarianship. Individuals were trained to possess efficient and maximal comprehension in all kinds of learning resource centers, instructional media centers, libraries, and information centers. Courses offered included Foundations of Library and Information Sciences, Selection and Acquisition of Materials, and Library Organization and Administration.

Assets and Administrative Structure

One was accepted to the School of Library and Information Sciences through the Graduate School. The School of Library and Information Sciences originally functioned under the administration of a director under the President of the University. In 1982 the department was placed under the oversight of the College of Humanities.
