with the purpose of promoting art and industry. It was organized to provide an environment to foster industrial thought, power of character and individual development. Between 1904 and 1906 the School of Arts and Industries was the administrative body for the following departments: Trades, Agriculture, Household Economics, Fine Art and Design, Art and Manual Training, Art, Industries, and Normal Manual Training. Beginning in 1905, the School of Arts and Industries also offered courses in Nursing and Obstetrics.

The School of Arts and Industries within Brigham Young University was directed by Elbert H. Eastmond, Principal, under the direction of the president of the university, George H. Brimhall. Courses in Nursing and Obstetrics within the School of Arts and Industries were under the direction of Frederic Cliff, M.D.
