The Department of Sociology was a part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences beginning in 1954 up until it was renamed the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1961. Ariel S. Ballif (1954-1955) and Reed Bradford (1955-1960) served as chairmen.

Students majoring or minoring in the Department of Sociology were advised to broaden their education by taking courses in related areas such as zoology, history, psychology, and archaeology. Courses in the department included that of Social Ethics, Social Case Work, Marriage, the Family, and the Sociology of Religion.
