The Russian Studies program was originated in 1964 within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and was under the direction of the College Dean, John T. Bernhard. In 1966, the program was placed within the College of Social Sciences under Melvin P. Mabey. In 1970, the program was placed within the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages.

Functions

To prepare students for careers and advanced study requiring a broad understanding of Russia and of the Soviet Union. Students in Russian studies combine the depth of a major in economics, geography, history, political science, or Russian language and literature, with the breadth of integrated study concerning Soviet Russia provided by several disciplines.

The Russian Studies Program functioned under the administration of a coordinator who was under the direction of the college dean.
