The Russian Studies Program was a part of the College of Social Sciences beginning in 1965. Previously it was part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and was directed by the College Dean until 1966 when Melvin P. Mabey was the Coordinator of the program.

Functions
To prepare students for careers and advanced study requiring a broad understanding of Russia and of the Soviet Union. Students in Russian studies combine the depth of a major in economics, geography, history, political science, or Russian language and literature, with the breadth of integrated study concerning Soviet Russia provided by several disciplines.

The Russian Studies Program functioned under the administration of a coordinator who was under the direction of the college dean.
