The Research Division was founded in 1921, under the direction of President Harris. After President Harris’ resignation in 1945, Christen Jensen was named Acting Director by President McDonald and served from 1945-1949. From 1949-1951 Carl F. Eyring served as Director. From 1951-1952, Wayne B. Hales served as Director. From 1952-1956, Harvey Fletcher served as Director. From 1956-1967 Tracy Hall served as Director. From 1967-1970 Lane Compton served as Acting Director. From 1970-1981 Leo P. Vernon served as Director. From 1981-1982 Neal E. Lambert was Director. From 1982-1985 Garth F. Frazier served as Director. From 1985-1992 John D. Lamb served as Director. In 1992, the position of Director passed to Gary Hooper who abolished the Research Division and established the Office of Research and Creative Works.

Hales (1951-1952), Harvey Fletcher (1952-1956), Tracy Hall (1956-1967), Lane Compton (1967-1970), Leo P. Vernon (1970-1981), Neal E. Lambert (1981-1982), Garth F. Frazier (1982-1985), John D. Lamb (1985-1990). In 1990, the division was renamed the Office of Research and Creative Work.

Functions

To establish a strong presence of individual research amongst graduate and undergraduate students, as well as teachers. The Research Division oversaw the allocation of funds to various individuals and departments and served as a representative of the school administration to various government agencies, as well as other universities. All grant requests and proposals went through the Research Division and were decided upon with the Academic Vice-President of Brigham Young University.
