The Religious Studies Center was a part of Religious Instruction at the time of it's establishment. Beginning in 1983 it was a part of Religious Education. It was a center which promoted research in several areas, and was not involved in classroom instruction nor degree programs. Ellis T. Rasmussen (1978-1982), Robert J. Matthews (!982-1990), Donald Q. Cannon (1990-1991), Robert L. Millet (1991-2001), and Andrew C. Skinner (2001-2004).

Functions

The Religious Studies Center promoted research in the areas of Ancient Studies, Church History, Judeo-Christian Studies, Scripture, and World Religions. Additional areas were Bible, Book of Mormon, Church History, Doctrine and Covenants, Special Projects, and Pearl of Great Price. The center's focus is on research, writing, and other scholarly activities of religion-oriented research.

The Religious Studies Center functioned under the administration of a director, the dean of Religious Instruction and then Religious Education.
