The Religious Studies Center was a part of Religious Instruction at the time of its establishment in 1976. Beginning in 1983 it was a part of Religious Education. It was a center which promoted research in several areas, and was not involved in classroom instruction nor degree programs. Jeffrey R. Holland (1976-1977), Ellis T. Rasmussen (1977-1982), Robert J. Matthews (1982-1990), Donald Q. Cannon (1990-1991), Robert L. Millet (1991-2001), Andrew C. Skinner (2001-2007), and Richard N. Holzapfel (2007- ).

Functions
The Religious Studies Center promotes research in the areas of Ancient Studies, Church History, Judeo-Christian Studies, Scripture, and World Religions. Additional areas were Bible, Book of Mormon, Church History, Doctrine and Covenants, Special Projects, and Pearl of Great Price. The center's focus is on research, writing, and other scholarly activities of religion-oriented research.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Dean of Religious Education served as the Director of the Religious Studies Center until 2007. Since this time, the position of Dean of Religious Education has been separate from the Director of Religious Studies Center.
