The Purchasing Department was created in 1921 to have a single department in charge of purchasing all supplies and services for the university. In 1973 the Purchasing Department was merged into the Church Central Purchasing Department of the Church of Jesus Christ with the title Provo Area Office, but retained its name. Head purchasing agents included Kiefer Sauls (1921-1946), and Cornelius R. Peterson (1946-1975).
