The Preparatory School was originally established as a division within Brigham Young Academy in 1882 to replace the Primary Department and aid the Intermediate Department.  In 1093, when the Academy was arranged into eight schools and departments, the Preparatory School was organized to provide an education for older students below the High school grade who had limited opportunities for education to complete the eighth grade.  The school boasted an environment without social distinctions where students could properly learn with older peers.
