The Preparatory School was originally established as a division within Brigham Young Academy in 1882 replacing the Primary Department and aiding the Intermediate Department. In 1903, when the Academy was arranged into eight schools and departments, the Preparatory School was organized under the direction of a principal. Later in 1909, the Preparatory School merged into the Brigham Young High School as the Sub-High School.

Description

Established: 1903

Abolished: 1909

Functions

Between 1903 and 1909, the Preparatory School was organized to provide an education for older students below the High school grade who had limited opportunities for education to complete the eighth grade. The school boasted an environment without social distinctions where students could properly learn with older peers with possibility to advance to the High School. Between 1904 and 1907, the Preparatory School also had the responsibility to prepare missionaries to enter the field of labor who had received a call from the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
