It was originally created in order to provide faculty and student pictures for the university yearbook, the Banyan. Once it was officially incorporated into the University under Auxiliary Services, its services increased to include any photography order from students, instructional departments, or administrative officials. At times it worked with the News Bureau and often photographed sporting and public events on campus. Beginning in 1965, the Photo Studio became the only place on campus any photographic work could be commissioned. It then facilitated any academic or instructional photographic or graphic work, including silk-screening, aerial photography, and departmental portraits. In 1972, the Instructional Services Division created Instructional Photo/Graphics which facilitated all instructional and academic photographic work. The Photo Studio was then responsible only as a commercial entity for commissioned work on campus.
