Orientation activities typically included participation in small groups, tours of campus, help with registration, and disseminating information about all of the social, religious, and academic opportunities available, meetings with leadership, and get-together activities.  Later, orientation also came to include seminars in career opportunities, mini courses, orientation to the academic support services, and testing opportunities.  Presently, NSO activities may include campus tours, learning about the library, academic advising, scholarships, financial aid, Freshman Academy, honors education, and an introduction to several of the traditions of the Y.

1978 brought the addition of Reference Groups to NSO.  Facutly members led groups of eight to fifteen students.  Students met with their leader two hours a week for discussion and activities.  Their purpose of the groups was to help class members explore the University, discover their own personal meaning and goals, build friendships, and to have a forum for sharing ideas.  Today, many orientation activities are centered around the later form of Reference Groups, now know as Y Groups.  These are small cohorts of students led by upperclassmen that offer students individualized attention.
