The Linguistics Program was established in 1968 as a graduate program leading to an M.A. degree in theoretical or applied linguistics. It was housed within the College of Humanities and the Graduate School. Howard W. Blair served as the coordinator until the program was granted departmental status in 1972.

Functions

The program was designed to provide specialized training in modern linguistics with emphasis either on the description of linguistic structure per se or on language teaching and learning problems. The program offered a Masters degree and no undergraduate baccalaureate.

The department was administered by the program coordinator, under direction from the college dean.
