Instructional TV was a program created in 1965 under the governance of KBYU and Auxiliary Services in order to demonstrate television and its capacities for education to students, faculty, as well as government researchers. Crippled by politics and technical problems, the program was ultimately a failure and its capacities were eventually divided into other programs and entities by 1976. Instructional TV managers included Owen S. Rich (1965-1966), Bernell Edwards (1966-1970), Stephen Anderson (1970-1971), and Harold Hickman (1971-1976).

Functions

The function of the Instructional TV program was to explore the use of large scale media in education, specifically by employing the use of a large-screen format television in lecture in order to reach large bodies of students. Instructional TV involved the use of a 16'x20' television image which corresponded with a live lecture being given to up to 1,000 students. This program was used in 'mass orientation' classes with incoming freshmen.

Assets and Administrative Structure

From 1965-1971, Instructional TV was under the jurisdiction of Broadcast Services. In 1971, power transferred to Instructional Services. The program had a manager who reported to the director of each superior unit.
