The Institute of Mormon Studies was established in 1966 within the College of Religious Instruction. Truman G. Madsen served as the director from 1966 until 1976. In 1976 the Institute of Mormon Studies was discontinued when the Center for Religious Studies was established and assumed the function of the Institute.

Functions

The Institute of Mormon Studies was an interuniversity institute established to sponsor and correlate, and eventually to select and publish, research efforts in all fields that relate to Mormon culture, its history, thought, and institutions. The Institute functioned to develop authentic bibliographies and indexes of various Mormon-related source materials and collections; to honor distinguished scholarship by research grants and publication aids of high-quality research; and to establish a close-working relationship, not only with recognized scholars, but with associations of similar interest, and with individuals or institutions disposed to contribute to or draw upon the developing resources of the institute.
