In 1975 the Institute of Government Service was created to administer the Master of Public Administration degree. In 1976 the institute was placed under the direction of the Graduate School of Management. Karl N. Snow served as the institute director from 1975 to 1979. Following 1979 the Institute of Government Service was abolished and replaced by the newly created Institute of Public Management.

Functions

The institute offered graduate studies leading to the Master of Public Administration which prepared students for leadership positions in the public sector. The program would aid graduate students seeking positions with public and private government research organizations and semiprivate organizations with a public purpose. In addition to the course work, students were also required to specialize in an area of their choice. These areas included: local government administration, urban and regional planning, program management, personnel administration, finance administration, administrative research and planning, manpower and administration, administration of criminal justice, and international administration.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The Institute of Government Service was originally classified as a special academic program from 1975 to 1976. During this time the Institute was administered by the institute director, who was under the direction of the university president. In 1976 the institute was then placed under the administrative direction of the newly created Graduate School of Management. The institute director was then under the direction of the dean of the Graduate School of Management.
