The Institute of Genealogical Studies was established in 1972 to coordinate genealogical instruction and research on campus. The institute was part of the College of Social Sciences. It was also associated with the Genealogical Research Center. The institute was later absorbed into the Department of Family and Local History in 1978. The institute director was Phillip R. Kunz (1972-1973), and the teaching coordinator was Norman E. Wright (1972-1978).

Functions
