The Institute of American Indian Studies was approved in 1958, but did not start functioning fully at Brigham Young University until the 1960-1961 school year. Spencer W. Kimball served as the honorary chair and S. Lyman Tyler served as the institute director.

Functions
The Institute of American Indian Studies existed to serve agencies of the Church with programs related to American Indians; to assist Brigham Young University and other units within the Unified Church School System to develop programs that provided educational opportunities for Indians; to work in cooperation with governmental agencies interested in American Indian issues; and to work with Indian tribes or groups. The institute's overall purpose was to do research and accumulate and disseminate information concerning the American Indians.
