The Indian Education Program was established in 1955 as a Brigham Young University Program under the direction of an Indian Education Committee. The original committee consisted of S. Lyman Tyler as chairman, Shelby Clark as a member, and Robert Gwilliam as Advisor to Indian Students. In 1964 the Indian Education Program became the American Indian Education Program in the General College under the direction Paul E. Felt, BYU Director of Indian Affairs.

Functions
The Program functioned to assist Indian students in their university experience. Under the program the students tuition was waived, books were furnished to them on a loan basis, assistance was given in obtaining employment and living accommodations in homes in Provo, and college preparatory courses were offered by special faculty.
