The Indian Education Program was established in 1955 as a Brigham Young University Program under the direction of an Indian Education Committee. The chairmen of the BYU Indian Education Committee included S. Lyman Tyler (1955-60), Robert Gwillaim (1960-1963), and Dale Shumway (1963-1964). In 1964 the Indian Education Program became the American Indian Education Program under the direction Paul E. Felt, BYU Director of Indian Affairs, in the Office of Indian Affairs.
