The American Indian Education Department was organized in 1966 as a part of the General College and a formalized department following the American Indian Education Program. It was a department for both Indian students and those students preparing to work among Indian people. Claude B. Duerden (1966-1968) and Royce P. Flandro (1966-1973) served as faculty adviser and chairman, respectively. In 1973 the Department of General Curriculum merged with American Indian Education Dept. and moved under the College of General Studies. John Raymond Maestas served as chairman from 1974-1979. In 1979 it moved under Nonmajor Programs with Virgus Con Osborne serving as chairman until 1984 when he merged the American Indian Education Dept. with Multicultural Education.

Functions

The American Indian Education Department functioned to assist in preparing Indian college students for successful living and employment as well as students planning to work with Indian people. The programs listed under the department consisted of Vocational, Technical and semiprofessional, undergraduate and graduate. Each Indian student had the aid of an adviser to assist in working out each individual program. In 1973 the Dept. evolved their functions to assist Indian students from North, Central, and South American and students from the Pacific Islands to thrive in college work. The department was divided into three areas: Indian Student Activities, Indian Personal Services, and Indian Academic Services. In 1979, the department added a fourth area, the Native American Studies Minor.

The American Indian Education Department functioned under the administration of a chairman under a college dean. In 1973 the American Indian Education Dept. moved under the College of General Studies when the Department of General Curriculum merged with it. In 1979 the department moved under Nonmajor Programs. In 1984 the department dissolved into Multicultural Education.
