The American Indian Education Department was organized in 1966 as a part of the General College and a formalized department following the American Indian Education Program. It was a department for both Indian students and those students preparing to work among Indian people. Claude B. Duerden (1966-1968) and Royce P. Flandro (1966-1973) served as faculty adviser and chairman, respectively. In 1973 the Department of General Curriculum merged with American Indian Education Dept. and moved under the College of General Studies. John Raymond Maestas served as chairman from 1974-1979. In 1979 it moved under Nonmajor Programs with Virgus Con Osborne serving as chairman until 1984 when he merged the American Indian Education Dept. with his Multicultural Education.
