The Hispanic-American Studies Program was established within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1959 as an interdepartmental program. When the College of Humanities and Social Sciences split into the College of Humanities and the College of Social Sciences in 1965, the Hispanic-American Studies Program became the Latin-American Studies Program within the College of Humanities. The supervisor of the program was listed as Lee B. Valentine from 1959 to 1964.

Variant Names

Brigham Young University. Hispanic American Studies Major

Brigham Young University. Hispanic American Studies Program

Description

Established: 1959

Abolished: 1965

Location: Provo, Utah (1959-1965)

Functions

The Hispanic-American Studies Program was originally designed to meet the professional and cultural goals of individuals especially interested in Latin America whose needs were not served by a major in one department. Individuals interested in the area were to prepare themselves professionally by enrolling in the program to get a greater breadth and comprehensive understanding of the area.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The program was administered by a supervisor under the direction of the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1959 to 1964. However, there is no supervisor listed for the 1964-1965 school year so it is assumed that the program was directly administered by the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences during that year.
