The General Services was formed in 1972 when the Auxiliary Special Services and the Department of Housing were combined into one unit. The main purpose of the was to oversee Housing, Conferences during the summer, and the Language Training Mission/Mission Training Center. General Services itself was run by a head of the department which included Rulon G. Craven (1972), Clyde Bair (1972-1987), and Delyle Barton (1987-1990).

Functions
The major objective of the General Services were: to give direction and assistance to the Director of Housing. Provide management and skills training programs, necessary safety programs, and to coordinate food and housing needs for summer conferences and coordinate BYU services to the Language Training Mission (1972-1980). General Services also assisted with special projects, such as overseeing the United Way program.

Initially General Services reported to Assistant to the President in charge of Communications, but later reported to Support Services Vice-President. General University Services acted under the direction of the department.
