Brigham Young University. Freshman Year Office

The Freshman Year Office was created in 2002 under the Office of Undergraduate Education. The office was headed by an Associate Dean and ultimately reported to the Dean of Undergraduate Education. During the tenure of the Freshman Year Office, the Dean was George S. Tate (2002-2006). Clark Webb ( - 2003) and R. Steven Turley (2003-2004) served as the Associate Deans over the office. In 2004, the name of the office was changed to the Office of First-Year Experience and R. Steven Turley continued to serve as the Associate Dean.

Functions

The office functioned to monitor and enhance the first year experience for incoming students at BYU. Various programs, including New Student Orientation, Freshman Academy, Freshman Seminars, and the Freshman Reading Program, were created for this purpose. The major focus was on Freshman students, but the office also concerned itself with entering transfer students and the challenges faced by international students. The office often coordinated with other entities on campus such as campus housing to ensure a good experience for entering freshman.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The Freshman Year Office functioned under the Office of Undergraduate Education. The Associate Dean over the office reported directly to the Dean of Undergraduate Education. The office itself administered various programs, among them being New Student Orientation and Freshman Academy.
