Brigham Young University. Films Committee

The Films Committee was created in March of 1972 by President Oaks. Darrel Monson served as its first chairman. Sterling J. Albrecht served as a later chairman. In 1981, this Committee was renamed the Films Policy and Review Committee.

Functions

Originally, this Committee was created to review appropriateness, quality, and balance of films to be presented on campus and to coordinate the activities of the various subcommittees. The subcommittees under the Films Committee had the following functions: the Cinema Films Subcommittee reviewed the appropriateness and quality of films, other than standard educational films, to be shown on campus in support of a class or area of study; the Entertainment Subcommittee reviewed the appropriateness and quality of entertainment films to be presented on campus (their standards was what was appropriate for family entertainment); the Social Issues Films Subcommittee reviewed the appropriateness, quality, and balance of social issues films to be presented on campus. Towards the end of this Committee, its function was to give general supervision to the following authorized entertainment film programs on campus: Varsity Theater, Weekend Movie, Film Society and Housing. The Committee was responsible for recommending appropriate standards for films, and where necessary, for reviewing and recommending films prior to showing. Lastly the Committee could provide for editing certain portions to make films acceptable

Assets and Administrative Structure

The members of the Films Committee were appointed by the President and the Committee as a whole reported to the Executive and Academic Vice-Presidents. By 1980 they reported to the Support Services Vice President. This Committee was governed by the decisions of the Academic Enrichment Council. In the 1970's three subcommittees served under the Films Committee: The Cinema Films Subcommittees, the Entertainment Subcommittee and the Social Issues Films Subcommittee.
