Established in 1914, the Extension Department operated under a three-man committee. The Committee consisted of: Harvey Fletcher, Edwin S. Hinckley, John C. Swenson (1914-1915); James L. Brown, William H. Chamberlin, John C. Swenson (1915-1916); James L. Brown, Martin P. Henderson, John C. Swenson (1916-1919). The Department was renamed the Extension Division in 1920.

Functions
The Extension Department served to administer courses to those who could not attend Brigham Young University. It offered correspondence courses, as well as extension courses, and worked to bring the spirit of education to all members of the Church.

The Extension Department operated under a three-man committee. Those who served on the committee were also members of the University Council.
