The Elementary Training School was established in 1922 with the Secondary Training School within the Training School. Its aim was to provide a place of learning for children and aspiring elementary instructors, and served as training ground for those enrolled in elementary education courses at Brigham Young University. It operated under the guidance of the following: L. John Nuttall, Jr. (Director, 1922-1923), Mary J. Ollorton (Principal, 1923-1924), Hermese Peterson (Principal, 1924-1949), Dorothy N. Candland (1949-1950), and Charles M. Brown (1950-1955). In 1955, the Elementary Training School became the Elementary Laboratory School.

Functions
The Elementary Training School served as a laboratory in modern school practice for the training of student teachers in the field of elementary education, and for the testing of current educational theory.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Elementary Training School operated under a Director from 1922-1923. It was then placed under the guidance of a Principal who reported to the Director of the Training School. In 1930, the Training Schools were placed within the College of Education, where after the Director reported to the Dean of the College of Education.
