The Department of Youth Leadership, previously the Department of Scouting Education, was organized in 1960 at the the of the establishment of the College of Physical Education. Thane Packer served as chairman throughout the twenty-one years of existence.

Functions

The Department of Youth Leadership functioned to train students in understanding and skills of the scouting program to be better leaders in this area of the Church and communities in which they live and to train students for possible professional careers in youth leadership for the Boy Scouts of America and similar organizations. Courses offered included Boy Scout Leadership, Scouting in the L.D.S. Church, and National Camp School.
