The Department of Travel Study was established in 1972 and was part of the Division of Continuing Education. In 1978, responsibility for Study Abroad was split into a separate unit within the division. Those who served as director of the department were Robert C. Taylor (1972-1993) and George J. Functions

To provide students with opportunities to study in different areas of the world. Different areas of the United States and of the nations of the world are more closely interrelated today than ever before through the marvels of high-speed transportation and long-range communications, making travel abroad a more important and more exciting educational experience than ever before.

The Department of Travel Study is under the supervision of a director who reports directly to the dean of the Division of Continuing Education. An advisory council for Travel-Study Tours existed from 1957-1968.
