The Department of Technology was created when the Department of Industrial Technology was renamed in 1972. The Department of Technology was placed in the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology in 1973. In 1984 the college was renamed the College of Engineering and Technology and the Department of Technology was placed within that college. Department chairs included Ross "J" McArthur (1972-1979), Kay F. Brown (1979-1980), John J. Kunzler, Jr. (1981-1986), E. Max Raisor (1986-1987), J.L. Carroll (1987-1989), John J. Kunzler (1989-1990). In 1990 the department became part of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology.

Description

Established: 1972

Abolished: 1990

Location: Provo, Utah (1972-1990)

Functions

The Department of Technology offered two-year associate degrees in a variety of industrial technician programs as well as four-year baccalaureate degree programs in design and computer graphics, building construction, manufacturing, and electronics. Courses included that of Aeronautical Drafting, Digital Electronics, Gas Welding, and House Wiring. By 1984 these functions had evolved to three areas of training: 1) Design Engineering Technology where students are exposed to the broad spectrum of engineering design and become proficient in the graphic skills related to that discipline. 2) Electronics Engineering Technology where students are generally interested in applying engineering principles and supervising people for work in the areas of design, development, production, construction, operation, sales, and management. 3) Manufacturing Engineering Technology where students learn basic and advanced manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, cast metals, metal forming, and plastics.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The Department of Technology functioned under the administration of a chairman under a college dean. The department was associated with multiple colleges, including the College of Industrial and Technical Education (1972-1973), the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology (1973-1984), and the College of Engineering and Technology (1984-1990).
