The Department of Speech was created under the direction of the College of Fine Arts in 1929. It replaced the former Department of Public Speaking and Dramatic Art. Department chairmen included: Alonzo J. Morley (1930), T. Earl Pardoe (1931-1951), Harold I. Hansen (1952-1953).

Functions
The Department of Speech was responsible for the teaching of the following courses: principles of speech, open forum discussion, speech analysis, elementary elocution, Classical Literature, dramatic monologue, interpretative literature, dialogue and scene presentation, representative dialect, practical phonetics, advanced speech composition, religious public speaking, argument and debate, impersonation, play production, stage craft, history of dramatic production, dramatic technique, public speaking, voice and speech improvement, and methods of teaching speech.
