Brigham Young University. Dept. of Sociology and Social Work

The Department of Sociology and Social Work was created in 1980 when the Department of Sociology was renamed. Bruce A. Chadwick served as chair during this period. In 1981, the department was split into the Department of Sociology and the Department of Social Work.

Functions

The department offered BS degrees in Professional Sociology, Social Work, and Sociology; MS degree in Sociology and the MSW in Social Work; and PhDs in Family Studies, Social Organization, and Social Psychology. Though the goals for each degree differed slightly, in general the department sought to encourage societal understanding and personal development to prepare students for the responsibilities of family, church, community, and citizenship roles, as well as recruiting students for the professional fields of social work and sociology.
