Brigham Young University. Dept. of Sociology (1966-1980)

The Department of Sociology was created in 1965 in the College of Social Sciences. In 1980, the department was renamed the Department of Sociology and Social Work. Chairs of the department were Joseph N. Symons (1966-1968), John R. Christiansen (1968-1970), Evan T. Peterson (1970-1975), Spencer J. Condie (1975-1979), and Bruce A. Chadwick (1979-1980). Willard Eugene Gibbons served as director of the social work program from 1978-1980.

Functions

The Department of Sociology aimed to educate students about those roles, statuses, institutions, etc., which contribute to social stability. Two majors and degrees were generally offered: sociology and social work, preparing students for professional work as social workers, probation officers, and the like, or graduate and doctoral studies in sociology or social work. During the mid-seventies, undergraduates were required to select a track from amongst professional sociology, applied sociology, general sociology, and secondary teaching. Beginning in 1978, the social work portion of the department was treated as a sub-department, with a dedicated director and separate entries in the catalog.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The department was overseen by a chair reporting to the college dean; beginning in 1978, there was also a director of social work, who reported to the chair.
