The Department of Rural Social Economics was established in 1929, and served the colleges of Applied Science and Arts and Sciences. Lowry Nelson acted as department chairman from 1929 to 1931.

Functions
The Department of Rural Social Economics was designed to examine the issues and complexities facing agriculture in the Western states.
