The Department of Health Sciences was organized in 1970 when the Department of Health and Safety Education was abolished, and continued many of the same programs, goals, and objectives. It was originally a part of the College of Physical Education and then became part of the College of Health and Human Performance.  The following individuals served as chairmen: Ray Watters (1970-1979), Ronald L. Rhodes (1979-1986), L. McKay Rollins (1986-1992), Keith Karren (1992-1999), Gordon B. Lindsay (1999-2005), Brad L. Neiger (2005- ). The department chair of 2018 is Carl L. Hanson.
