In 1953, the Department of Philosophy of Education and Guidance split into the Department of Philosophy and History of Education and the Department of Personnel and Guidance. The Department of Philosophy and History of Education taught only upper-division and graduate-level courses, including the history of educational thought, the history of education in America, comparative education, the history of philosophy, social ethics, philosophy of education, and current problems and issues of education. In 1955, the department was renamed the Department of Educational Values and Programs, while maintaining its position in the College of Education.
