The Department of Philosophy was first created as a separate department in 1969. Up until this time, philosophical studies had been included into the areas of Church history and theology. Since its creation, the dept. has been a part of several colleges, including the College of Religious Instruction, the College of General Studies, and the College of Humanities. The following individuals have served as chairman: Chauncey C. Riddle (1969-1970), C. Terry Warner (1970-1972), Noel B. Reynolds (1972-1976), Dennis Rasmussen (1976-1977, 2001-), K. Codell Carter (1977-1984, 1995-2001), Dennis J. Packard (1984-1990), and James E. Faulconer (1990-1995).

Functions

When first organized, the dept. functioned to help students develop perceptive thinking and reading skills and to become familiar with ideas on human problems from wise individuals. The objective of the Dept. of Philosophy has not changed very much during its existence as a dept., and continues to provide insight into the fundamental concerns of life.
