In 1946, the Department of Philosophy of Education expanded its name and coursework offerings, and became the Department of Philosophy of Education and Guidance. Courses included thesis writing and research, mental hygiene, clinical psychology, the history of educational thought, the history of education in America, psychological tests, character education, social ethics, philosophy of education, occupations counseling and guidance, and social work. Then in 1953, the department split into the Dept. of Philosophy and History of Education and the Dept. of Personnel and Guidance.

In 1953, the Department of Philosophy of Education split into the Dept. of Philosophy and History of Education and the Dept. of Personnel and Guidance. The Department of Personnel and Guidance took on the counseling and guidance coursework as well as the personnel administration courses. In 1955, the department was renamed the Department of Educational Research and Services.
