The Dept. of Modern and Classical Languages was established and placed in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1926 when the Dept. of Modern Languages and Latin was renamed.   The Department Chairs were: Gerrit de Jong, 1927-1929; Benjamin F. Cummings, 1930-1951; Harold W. Lee, 1952-1953; and Arthur R. Watkins, 1954.  The department was abolished in 1954 when the College of Arts and Sciences was abolished.  The department was then placed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences retaining its functions.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages was established and placed in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1926 when the Dept. of Modern Languages and Latin was renamed. In 1954 the department was transferred to the newly formed College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 1957 the department was renamed the Department of Languages. The department chairs included Gerrit de Jong (1927-1929), Benjamin F. Cummings (1930-1951) Harold W. Lee (1952-1953), and Arthur R. Watkins (1954-1957).

Functions

The Dept. of Modern and Classical Languages taught classes in: French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Phonetics. By 1954 the department was also teaching: Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Greek, Semitics, and Linguistics.
