The Department of Military Science (Army ROTC) was first organized in 1968. The department had near-instant success, and grew until it had the largest all voluntary AROTC unit in the United States. Colonels David R. Lyon (1968-1972) and Bartley E. Day (1972-1973) served as chairmen.

Functions

The Department of Military Science offered instruction in general military science leading to a commission in the United States Army Reserve or sometimes in the Regular Army. As part of the course work, students were required to complete rigorous summer camps. Courses included Basic Military Science, Leadership Laboratory, and a course encompassing Map and Aerial Photo Reading and an Introduction to Operations and Basic Tactics.
