The Dept. of Mechanics was a part of the Church Teachers College until the college was split in 1920. The department was placed under the direction of the School of Arts and Sciences, and was transferred to the College of Arts and Sciences in 1921. Carl F. Eyring was the chairman of the Dept. of Mechanics. The department taught the courses in drafting, woodwork, auto mechanics, and ironwork. In 1922 the department was renamed the Dept. of Mechanic Arts and placed in the College of Applied Sciences. Drafting was made its own department and also placed in the College of Applied Sciences.

Functions
The Dept. of Mechanics includes classes of: mechanical drawing, instrumental perspective, architectural drawing, general construction, cabinet construction, building, shop work (wood), shop work (iron), and construction and repair. In 1921 auto mechanics was added to the curriculum.
